Dear Sandeep,
On Monday, Raja traveled to the Quad Cities to celebrate Illinois unions and workers at the annual Rock Island County Democrats Labor Day Picnic. On Senator Dick Durbin's legacy, Raja said "I couldn't pretend to replace him. I could only build on the foundation of success that he's laid. I'd like to continue with his service of helping everyone in Illinois, regardless of where they live, including here in the Quad Cities." On the holiday's origins, Raja also said "Let's just remember that the labor movement is what made the middle class. We wouldn't have a middle class without them. So, I'm here to thank labor, and celebrate together with them and all of our families."
On Tuesday, Raja spoke to reporters after the House Oversight Committee's closed-door meeting with victims of Jeffrey Epstein. Following the testimonies, Raja said "I learned that there are a lot of brave women, on behalf of thousands of potential victims, that are sharing their stories. Whatever we do, we have to remember these victims. We have to do justice by them, at the same time we hold people accountable – and prevent this from ever happening again."
On Wednesday, Raja filed legislation to block Trump's National Guard deployment to Chicago. He introduced his Stop Trump's Abuse of Power Act as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which would prevent any president from unilaterally deploying active-duty military forces or federalizing the National Guard against communities without a request from a state or territory's elected leadership. On why he spearheaded this effort, Raja said, "No president should be able to turn the U.S. military into their personal police force. When Donald Trump threatens to send the National Guard into Chicago, it's not about keeping people safe — it's about militarizing a city, silencing dissent, and staging political stunts. Our amendment is simple: if you want to deploy troops into a state, you need the governor's request. Anything less is a dangerous abuse of power that tramples on the Constitution."
Later that day, Raja spoke with CNN's Brianna Keilar about fighting for accountability on behalf of the victims of Jeffrey Epstein. On the need for additional Republicans to join the discharge petition to force the release of the Epstein Files, Raja said "Look, if you were in that room with those survivors yesterday – I was there for about two and a half hours – it was gut-wrenching, it was emotional, it was extremely candid, specific, and credible. And you knew that when they called for transparency, accountability, and justice, we in Congress have to act. And while the Oversight Committee is properly procuring these documents from the Department of Justice, there's nothing like this discharge petition to make it extremely clear that all of the files need to be produced. That needs to be done by statute, not just by protocol, or the DOJ releasing what it wants."
On Thursday, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 2076 announced its endorsement of Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi for the U.S. Senate. "Congressman Raja is a steadfast champion for postal workers throughout Illinois, which is why the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 2076 is proud to endorse Raja for the U.S. Senate! As a vocal supporter of improving working conditions for letter carriers, increasing the speed and delivery rates of the Postal Service, and opposing privatization efforts, Congressman Raja is the fighter that Illinois needs. We look forward to continuing our work with Raja to strengthen the U.S. Postal Service and protect letter carriers," said National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 2076 President, Luis Rivas Jr.
"Our letter carriers do more than deliver mail — they deliver news, medication, crucial documents, and connection to millions of Illinois households, day in and day out. I'm deeply grateful for the endorsement of NALC Branch 2076 and look forward to continuing to work with President Luis Rivas Jr. to ensure these dedicated public servants receive the support they deserve," said Raja.
We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's efforts to stand up to Trump and fight for Illinois.
