Earlier this week, the House passed something called the "Stop Insider Trading Act" — which sure sounds good on paper.
But the second you read beneath the title of this bill, you realize this is nothing more than a sick, tired, MAGA political trick to boost them in November.
This poison-pilled, voter-disenfranchising bill is a disaster. Before I dig deeper, will you chip in $25 or $50 to Equal Opportunity Now today? » https://secure.actblue.com/donate/eon
Here's what they actually did:
I've spent years fighting to ban Members of Congress from trading stocks. I wrote the Ban Conflicted Trading Act. I led the push demanding leadership bring a real ban to the floor. Because if you serve the public, you serve the public — not your portfolio.
This bill does not do that. Under it, the wealthiest Members of Congress keep every share they already own, keep selling, and use their dividends to buy even more stock.
And President Trump and Vice President Vance? Exempt entirely.
Think about that. Donald Trump has made billions off this office — over a billion from crypto alone in a single year, while his sons cut deals backed by federal financing. The most corrupt president in American history wrote himself out of the corruption bill.
Then Republicans stapled a voter suppression mandate onto it — SAVE Act provisions the Senate has already rejected on a bipartisan basis. And they didn't even hide why.
Even one of my Republican colleagues admitted it out loud: They attached it not to win Democratic votes, but so Democrats would vote against a "stock trading ban" and they could run ads about it in November.
That's the whole play.
Eighty-six percent of Americans want a real ban on congressional stock trading. We could pass it tomorrow. Instead we got a press release with a poison pill inside it.
This is exactly why I founded Equal Opportunity Now. You cannot fix a corrupt system with the people profiting from it. We need leaders who will pass a ban with teeth — covering the President, the Vice President, and every Member of Congress.
