Last week, a senator asked Donald Trump's nominee to run America's intelligence agencies a simple question: who won the 2020 election?
He wouldn't answer.
Not once. Not under direct, repeated questioning. Jay Clayton — Trump's pick for Director of National Intelligence, the person who would oversee 18 intelligence agencies and have access to our nation's most sensitive secrets — sat in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee and refused to say the words "Joe Biden won."
This is the entire pattern of how Donald Trump fills the most important jobs in government. He isn't looking for independence or even basic competence. He's looking for loyalty — for people who will bend reality itself to fit his narrative rather than tell him, or the country, the truth.
We've already seen it with the interim intelligence chief Trump installed before Clayton — a man with zero intelligence experience whose last job was using a federal housing post to investigate Trump's political enemies. Now Trump wants to hand the permanent job to someone who can't bring himself to state a basic, settled fact because doing so might upset the President.
An intelligence community that answers to the President's ego instead of the truth is not just embarrassing. It's dangerous. It means the people responsible for warning us about real threats are chosen for their willingness to distort reality, not their ability to assess it honestly.
