Let's be honest about what's happening to the right to vote in this country. I've spent my entire career in Congress fighting to expand it. I authored the Help Students Vote Act to make sure young people could register and cast a ballot without jumping through hoops designed to discourage them. I helped pass the For the People Act through the House — the most significant expansion of voting rights in a generation.  I have believed, every single day I've served, that our democracy gets stronger every time we make it easier for people to participate, not harder. Utah just conducted one of the most exhaustive citizenship reviews of any state in this country's history — more than two million registered voters — and found exactly one confirmed case of a noncitizen registering. Zero instances of a noncitizen voting. So let's call this exactly what it is: It is not election security. It is election engineering. It is a deliberate, calculated effort to decide the outcome of elections before a single vote is cast — by making sure fewer of the "wrong" people get to cast one. I did not run for Congress to watch that happen. I built my career trying to open the door to democracy wider, not slam it shut on the people who need it most.
