Listen. There’s a lot of anxiety about this election, and for good reason. I feel it too. So before the next three weeks swallow us whole, let’s take a breath and spend one minute on something ridiculous.
At a rally in Tennessee on Saturday, the President announced that he thinks an ocean should be named after him.
An ocean. “Trump Ocean,” he suggested, or “Ocean of the Americas, something like that.” He’d also like a river, though he ruled out the Hudson and the Mississippi. This comes after the Gulf of America, after an order telling federal agencies to call Lake Ontario “Lake America,” and after he floated “New America” for New Mexico. Canada’s prime minister says Canadians will keep calling it Lake Ontario “then, now and always.”
I’m told he was joking. Then again, as he put it on Saturday, “Everyone thinks I kid.”
There’s only one name change I’m interested in this year: Which party is in control of Congress and the Senate.
Right now, Congress is run by Republicans who have let Trump do whatever he wants while prices climb and a war drags on. In 18 days, voters get to change that. Republican-controlled becomes Democratic-controlled. That’s the only renaming project I’m working on.
Equal Opportunity Now is helping Democrats up and down the ballot make that happen.
So take a deep breath. Then help us rename the majority. Chip in $18 right now, one dollar for every day left until Election Day. It’s the cheapest, most useful renaming project in America.
