Raja Update 7/18

Dear Friend,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

This week, Congressman Raja appeared on CNN and spoke to Poppy Harlow about the importance of protecting the privacy of women's reproductive health information entrusted to Big Tech, and they also discussed national gun regulation. Congressman Raja told Poppy, "We are trying to shed sunlight on those [privacy] policies and exactly which companies [making period app trackers] are doing what, so that women can actually make better informed decisions in the marketplace, even at the same time that we're pursuing legislation to provide privacy protection for everybody." When the discussion turned to gun control legislation, the Congressman stressed that "only national common sense gun control can prevent these tragedies that are unfortunately unfolding every day in places like Chicago and other cities."

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi also appeared on FOX32 Chicago. Reporters noted that the Congressman recently returned from a trip to Germany, Austria, and Poland – places where many Ukrainian refugees have fled to. Congressman Raja said, "We have to do whatever it takes to help them. They are fighting for freedom and democracy across the world, not just in Ukraine – and if Vladimir Putin can get away with this invasion he's not going to stop there. He's going to go after additional countries."

The Congressman joined Chicago WTTW to discuss the most recent Jan. 6 Committee hearings as well as the Highland Park shooting. When asked what it would take to pass legislation on an assault rifle ban and move the needle with lawmakers, Congressman Raja said, "Quite frankly, I didn't think that we would arrive at a bipartisan package the other day that got signed into law but we did because there is a change that I sense among Independents and Republicans on this issue."

In a later segment on the same program, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi was also asked about the ongoing abortion debate and the Democrat's proposal to reform the filibuster. About the filibuster, the Congressman said, "It is not a time to agonize, it's a time to organize - in one election cycle we could elect at least 2 or 3 new senators who would be willing to create that carveout at the least in the filibuster rules for reproductive freedom, gun rights, [and] voting rights." Congressman Raja later talked about data privacy saying, "We have to absolutely protect the privacy of all data that women have entrusted to technology companies - with their reproductive and sexual health."

Congressman Raja introduced the Robotext Scam Prevention Act to prohibit the use of automated telephone equipment in sending unsolicited text messages. "As my Subcommittee's investigation and others have shown, robotext scams aren't simply an annoyance, they cost American consumers hundreds of millions of dollars each year," the Congressman said. "While we must continue to educate Americans about how to protect themselves and their loved ones from fraud, we also need stronger enforcement mechanisms to crack down on the criminals who perpetrate these scams."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.
