Speaker Appoints Congressman Raja to House’s COVID Select Committee

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

We are honored to report that Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has been chosen to serve on the Congressional Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis. In this time of need, the Subcommittee's work is of the utmost importance. Chairman Jim Clyburn (D-SC) welcomed the new members and had this to say regarding the work ahead, "In order to improve our nation's response, the Select Subcommittee will continue to examine the previous Administration's catastrophic errors that have allowed the virus to kill more than 420,000 Americans and caused millions to face an ongoing struggle to find work, stay in their homes, and feed their families. And we will continue to root out waste, fraud, and abuse in federal relief programs in order to protect taxpayer dollars and restore public trust in our government."

The Congressman spoke with WGN about his appointment to the new Subcommittee and our nation's coronavirus response. Congressman Raja described the Subcommittee's work in these words, "This particular committee is a bipartisan committee...it has some very senior leadership on both sides of the aisle, and it has a very broad jurisdiction. It's an opportunity for us to work together to get the vaccine out far and wide."

Earlier in the week, Congressman Raja penned an op-ed in The Hill addressing his investigation into the General Services Administration's (GSA) sale and lease of vehicles subject to dangerous recalls, as chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy. "The goal of my investigation was to urge the GSA to internally correct this dangerous practice. However, [the Trump] administration's GSA leadership has not provided a solution...We've heard for decades that government should operate more like a business, but it's time that the GSA stops operating like the worst kind of used car dealership."

The Congressman's investigation into government contracts to buy ventilators was also featured in the Washington Post. "the Department of Health and Human Services and the Defense Logistics Agency purchased 11,200 AutoMedx SAVe II+ ventilators from Combat Medical Systems, which distributes the devices. But the ventilators were inadequate for treating COVID-19 patients and remain in warehouses, according to Stephanie Bialek, a spokeswoman for the Strategic National Stockpile." In letters sent to the companies responsible, Congressman Raja wrote this, "AutoMedx appears to be the beneficiary of a potentially tainted procurement process."
