On Wednesday, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi spoke on the House floor to offer his support for the unprecedented second impeachment of Donald Trump. "When Donald Trump told rioters to go to the Capitol and 'fight like hell', he incited an attack on the Capitol and the ideals comprising the American Dream. I'm voting for impeachment because I know we're still the country my parents believed in, and I will fight like hell for it." Later that day, Donald Trump became the first president to have been impeached twice, in what was the most bipartisan impeachment in American history.
Thursday morning, Congressman Raja spoke to Fox 32 Chicago at length about his personal experience during the Capitol attack and also his thoughts on how Congress should continue to respond. "The most harrowing moment was when I received a phone call in the middle of the afternoon telling me that I must at all costs avoid any kind of physical encounter with these insurrectionists, with these rioters, because the consequences could be very very bad."
Also on Thursday, Congressman Krishnamoorthi spoke with ABC 7 about the inadequate security precautions taken on that fateful day. "There's failures at multiple levels, and right now we've launched an investigation with regard to the security situation." However, the Congressman was adamant that security for the Presidential Inauguration was being taken very seriously: "I have to tell you that we are not going to stand by and allow these militia groups to reap the kind of havoc that they did last Wednesday."
Congressman Raja also spoke with Zerlina Maxwell of NBC about Members of Congress who continued to challenge the election results that night, even after they had seen the dire consequences of their partisan games. "Certainly, a lot of my colleagues have a lot of explaining to do at this point … [they] really, in my opinion, poured additional gasoline on the flames and almost in some ways perpetuated or vindicated what the insurrectionists were doing earlier in the day."
