a momentous step forward

Future Forum PAC

Team,

This week, the U.S. Senate passed the 'Respect for Marriage' Act, which codifies same-sex and interracial marriages through federal protections. It now goes to the House for approval. It's a monumental step forward in the long fight for marriage equality.

Future Forum members helped pass the respect for marriage act to fight back against homophobia and unfair treatment of LGBTQ+ people.

Fighters for LGBTQ+ marriage equality have gained momentum since the 1969 Stonewall riots. During the 1990s, efforts to legalize same-sex marriage took on a new sense of urgency.

Several states moved to permit civil unions for same-sex couples — but these couples were still denied access to many federal rights automatically granted to heterosexual couples.

Furious right-wing Republicans controlling Congress struck back against the LGBTQ+ fight for equality by passing the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that defined marriage as an agreement between a man and a woman exclusively.

The Respect for Marriage Act ends 22 years of injustice created by DOMA.

But with conservatives on the Supreme Court publicly threatening to overturn landmark decisions like Obergefell v. Hodges, which, in 2015, ruled that same-sex marriage is a constitutional right, the Senate and the House are stepping up to secure the rights of LGBTQ+ persons.

Future Forum members are proud to be part of the movement ending years of deep discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community. Young people and future generations will not have to face the same obstacles.

Friends, these are the issues that drive young people to the polls. They are issues of freedom, equality, justice, and fundamental fairness for all. Future Forum members and Democrats must continue being at the forefront of these issues, working with young people everywhere to fulfill America's promise.

As we celebrate the passing of the Respect for Marriage Act, and with profound gratitude for all who fought this fight over decades, will you help Future Forum continue defending our rights and democracy with a contribution today?
