Raja Update 12/19

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy. For all those who celebrate, we wish you a Happy Hanukkah!

This week, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi appeared on Fox News to discuss legislation he proposed that would dramatically increase the IRS reporting threshold for income on a 1099-K form, the tax form used to report income from online platforms like Venmo and PayPal, among others. Currently, income on these platforms in excess of $20,000 triggers a 1099-K form, but under the new rule, that threshold would be changed to just $600. This change raises concern that individuals using the online platforms for purposes such as selling and buying second-hand items would be unfairly penalized for doing so. The Congressman told host John Roberts, "I don't agree with this particular rule, I've actually co-sponsored legislation to radically increase the threshold, and today I'm asking leadership to include some delay of the rule or increase in the threshold on a bipartisan basis as part of the year end spending package."

Congressman Raja also joined WGN Radio to comment on the news that WNBA athlete Brittney Griner returned home after several months in Russian custody. The Congressman told host John Williams, "We had to bring Griner home. Brittney Griner should never have been in a penal colony to begin with... The State Department has an advisory right now that no American should travel to Russia because Putin is a thug, and he takes people hostage for his political ends, and we see that having happened in this particular case as well."

Congressman Raja, as part of his work on the House Oversight Committee, is a vocal proponent of securing the privacy of Americans' data from pernicious foreign influence. Crain's Business reported on his recent action concerning Tik Tok, a popular social media app among teens and young adults. Tik Tok's parent company, ByteDance, is a Chinese-owned corporation that is required under Chinese law to make the app's user data available to the Chinese Community Party. The Congressman told reporters, "We're trying to build some attention for a very important issue...  It is a bipartisan concern. It is the concern of parents in my congressional district and across the country. It is the concern of anyone who wonders how data that is ultimately controlled by the Chinese Communist Party could come back and potentially harm Americans."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.
