This week, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi appeared on MSNBC to discuss the need for swift debt ceiling action. The Congressman warned that it "could be catastrophic to the economy" if Congress can't come to an agreement – and he's not willing to take that risk. He said "I personally believe that if Republicans don't act responsibly, that we Democrats have to lift the debt ceiling on our own and govern."
Congressman Krishnamoorthi appeared on CNN to further discuss the spending bill, debt ceiling, and provisions that he has authored. The Congressman said, "2.5 million women dropped out of the workforce because they can't afford childcare. Right now is the time to deal with that, as well as for instance passing some of the provisions I've authored -- investing in workforce training, vocational and skills based education to deal with those acute skilled labor shortages. If we do these things, we can help to tamp down inflationary pressures over the long term."
Congressman Krishnamoorthi spoke to San Antonio's News 4 Spotlight Investigative team about his fight to hold baby food manufacturers accountable and ensure children in the lower-income families that rely on the federally subsidized program known as "WIC" - the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, are not exposed to heavy metal contamination. The Congressman is asking the USDA to remove rice cereal, known to consistently contain arsenic, from all WIC lists, citing suitable alternatives like oat and multi-grain cereal. In addition, he wants the USDA to expand online shopping capabilities for families that use WIC in order to address the issue of food deserts, in which families may struggle with food insecurity. "We've got to regulate this area even more," said Congressman Krishnamoorthi. "If you're one of those parents on that program and you can only choose from foods that might be toxic to your children, what do you do?"
NBC4 Washington reported this week that the Congressman, as part of his work as Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, has introduced legislation that would prohibit the General Services Administration from selling cars with open safety recalls and called on them to develop a system for the agency to send applicable cars to a dealership for repair before selling them to the public. "It's beyond me why they wouldn't want these cars fixed," he said. "Maybe there's some inconvenience associated with it, but that's an inconvenience they have to accommodate."
The Congressman also spoke with former Lt. Governor of Maryland Michael Steele on The Michael Steele Podcast this week to discuss the reluctance of US vaccine manufacturers to license their vaccines for manufacture around the world, among other topics. During their discussion of vaccine distribution, Congressman Krishnamoorthi said, "We in the United States have to do everything we can to help vaccinate people in under-resourced countries around the world, otherwise these people are going to die and other variants are going to be generated...it will come onshore to wreak havoc on the United states. That's exactly what the Delta variant did..."
