Schumer advanced a Republican stopgap to end the government shutdown without securing the ACA subsidies Democrats had been demanding. Eight members of his caucus broke ranks. Progressive groups immediately called for his resignation. He’s clung to his leadership post — but the collapse in support inside his own party is historic. 61% of Democrats nationally say it’s time for Schumer to step down.Sen. Cory Booker told Fox News it’s “time… for new leadership” — the most direct call yet from a Senate colleague. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has publicly encouraged progressive challengers, already leads Schumer 55%–36% in a hypothetical 2028 New York primary. Schumer says he’s focused on winning back the Senate in 2026 and that new leadership now would be a distraction. His defenders say losing his seat to a primary would be worse. We want your take. |
