Raja Update 1/17

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

This week, Congressman Raja joined Joy-Ann Reid on MSNBC to discuss why it is essential to protect and support Social Security. Congressman Raja told Joy, "It turns out that something like half of Americans rely on Social Security for half of their income, so we're talking about maybe 20 million Americans who would go into poverty if Social Security weren't there for them. That's why it's so vital to make sure that we keep our promise."

Recently, Congressman Raja joined Jon Hansen on WGN Radio to discuss now-Speaker Kevin McCarthy's drawn-out bid for the Speakership and the concessions he gave to the Republicans who voted against him. "We've got to put the country over party, we've got to put the country over any personal interests or ambition, and at this point we've got to get the business of the people done... What I've said is don't negotiate with the hostage takers, negotiate with [Democrats], we're much more willing to be reasonable."

Congressman Raja also recently secured nearly $2.4 million in funding for the South Elgin branch of the Gail Borden Library. The branch plans on using the funds to triple its space  to include an expanded children's area, more study and meeting rooms, and more staff space. The branch also will be able to expand its staff and its hours of operation. Denise Raleigh, the library district's division chief for public relations and development, told the Daily Herald, "We are thrilled to be on a much faster track for the South Elgin expansion. Getting this earmark from the Congressman allows us to move forward with this needed expansion much more quickly."

We will continue to bring you news about Raja's work in D.C. and Illinois.
