Raja Update 1/5

Dear Sandeep,

Happy New Year! We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

On Tuesday, the 118th session of Congress convened in Washington. However, for the first time since the 68th Congress, the election for the Speaker of the House was not decided on the first ballot, delaying the swearing in of House members. As the Speaker has yet to be elected after a historic six rounds of voting spanning two days, the House will meet again today at noon for a potential seventh vote for Speaker.

Thank you again for your support of Congressman-elect Raja as he enters his fourth term in Congress!

Raja recently signed on to a letter directed at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, inquiring into what actions are being taken to police the recent spike of antisemitism and hateful messages in mainstream discourse. Raja joined Scott Schneider on Fox 32 to discuss this and told him, "When you have Kanye West... basically saying completely outrageous statements about Jews and in essence normalizing this type of speech -- when you see Donald Trump dining with Nick Fuentes, a known antisemite and white nationalist... that's deeply disturbing."

Recently, Raja sponsored a bipartisan bill to rename Schaumburg's Post Office to honor America's 21st century combat veterans, which was signed into law by President Joe Biden. Raja told reporters, "We can never fully repay our veterans for their sacrifices to our nation, but it is my hope that when members of our community visit the Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan Memorial Post Office Building, they will be reminded of the debt of gratitude we owe the heroes of our nation's most recent conflicts."

Raja also appeared on MSNBC to discuss the recent release of six years of Trump's tax returns and the importance of securing resources for the IRS. "I'm not thrilled about anyone's tax returns being made public... in Donald Trump's particular case we have to recognize that the Presidential audit program was completely broken... it was supposed to mandatorily audit the President's tax returns every year but it only did so once... it all speaks to the need for the IRS to get the resources they need to audit sophisticated tax payers like Trump and of course now we'll be looking at those tax returns for other issues as well."

We will continue to bring you news about Raja's work in D.C. and Illinois.
