Raja Update 1/30

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

Last Monday, Congressman Raja joined fellow lawmakers at a news conference to urge DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick to retract a statement about not enforcing Illinois' new assault weapons ban. Congressman Raja said to the press, "We need to know exactly what we're dealing with, and we all uniformly demand that he enforce the law as written. I just want to say with one voice, we cannot wait another day, we cannot wait another hour, we can't wait another minute for the sheriff to do his duty, because lives depend on it."

On Tuesday, Congressman Raja joined Niala Boodhoo on NPR's national 1A program to discuss his efforts to work across the aisle to protect Americans' data and security. The Congressman was the first Democrat to cosponsor the ANTI-SOCIAL Communist Party Act which would ban the social media app TikTok from operating in the U.S. by its parent company, ByteDance, which follows Chinese Communist Party directives. Congressman Raja explained to Niala that under Chinese law, "The user data and algorithms that are utilized by ByteDance and Tik Tok are ultimately controlled by the Chinese Community Party... ByteDance must provide the CCP with its user data and can't disclose when it does so... and must adhere to the CCP's 'correct political direction'."

Yesterday, Congressman Raja joined Jonathan Capehart and  Congressman Jason Crow on MSNBC to discuss Speaker McCarthy's tactics of political retribution by targeting fellow members of Congress for removal from their committee assignments. The Congressman said, "It's hard for me to see it any other way than political revenge. There's a red line that Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene and Congressman Gosar crossed which was promoting political violence...Schiff, Swalwell, and Omar didn't [promote political violence], and so that is why what we see happening right now is just political retribution, it's just politics." When the discussion moved to the ongoing U.S. support of Ukraine, the Congressman told them, "We have to do everything we can to help the Ukrainians to continue their momentum on the ground, but also to equip them with whatever it takes to repel the air offensive the Russians have also mounted with drones and other fighter aircraft."

We will continue to bring you news about Raja's work in D.C. and Illinois.
