Raja Update 1/9

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

On early Saturday morning, Congressman Raja joined Ayman Mohyeldin on MSNBC to discuss Kevin McCarthy's ascendance to the House speakership and on the term ahead. When asked about his thoughts on the current state of democracy, Congressman Raja told Ayman, "We started out today with a ceremony on the steps of the Capitol with regard to January 6th, 2021, and to hear from the families of the fallen speak, reminded us of the loss that so many people experienced, but also how close we were to seeing our election overturned, and an insurrection destroy our democracy. So what we have to do is do everything we can to reaffirm it, defend it, and speak up for all those rights and liberties that we cherish. And that's what I intend to do, and I think that my colleagues and Leader Jeffries will help lead the way on that."

On Saturday afternoon, Congressman Raja joined Alex Witt on MSNBC to discuss what the contentious election for House Speaker says about the challenges that lawmakers will face in the new Congress. "Unfortunately the chaos of last night, I think, portends more chaos, especially on important issues such as raising the debt limit, avoiding government shutdowns and so forth." The Congressman later added, "We are in for a tough time if Kevin McCarthy is going to continue to curry favor with [Republican detractors] instead of trying to do the business of the country and working with Democrats."

In his advocacy for the people of Illinois' 8th congressional district, Congressman Raja recently secured more than $13.6 million in funding for local programs, including initiatives to upgrade community facilities and expand access to mental health care. Projects for which the Congressman secured funding include, but are not limited to: $3 million to build a community mental health center and social services facility in Elgin, more than $2.3 million to expand the library in South Elgin, $500,000 for the Elk Grove Village Police Department to fund addiction treatment through its Elk Grove Village Cares program, and $500,000 for creation of an aviation maintenance program at Harper College in Palatine.

We will continue to bring you news about Raja's work in D.C. and Illinois.
