The peaceful transfer of power

Future Forum Members were on the House Select Committee on January 6th – and we will continue to play a key role in defending our democracy and our elections. 

Friends, On January 6th, 2021, the peaceful transfer of power was disrupted for the first time in our nation's history. Donald Trump's Big Lie and violent rhetoric around the 2020 elections led to an armed insurrection against our government that killed multiple people, shook the bedrock of our democracy, and changed the course of history forever. In the days and weeks that followed – despite Republican stonewalling – Democrats pushed for an investigation into the events of that day. And just last month, after over a year of rigorous investigation, the House Select Committee on January 6th issued four criminal referrals of Donald Trump to the Justice Department – concluding that he intentionally misled and provoked the insurrectionists as part of an attempt to stay in power after losing the 2020 election. Future Forum Members were on the House Select Committee on January 6th – and we will continue to play a key role in defending our democracy and our elections.  But with Republicans now in the majority, we expect Democrats to come under attack for their role in holding Donald Trump and his allies accountable for their attacks on our democracy.
