What West Point taught me

No excuses. Just putting in the hard work.
Future Forum PAC

Friends,

Since I was little, I've always been driven to serve my community. My parents taught me that we always have an obligation to give back and take care of those around us.

So after graduating from high school, I decided to attend West Point. It was a formative experience — filled with early mornings, late nights, and hard work. It instilled in me what service and sacrifice really means.

I still use the things I learned at West Point to this day. In fact, on Day One, you're taught that there are three acceptable responses when asked a question:

1) Yes, Sir!
2) No, Sir!
3) No excuse, Sir!

That's it. You get three responses — yes, no, or no excuse.

Pat Ryan is a former member of the U.S. Army. Use of his military rank, job titles, and photographs in uniform does not imply endorsement by the Department of the Army or the Department of Defense.

In politics, I've noticed that it's easy for folks to make excuses about things they did (or didn't) accomplish. "This didn't get done because of X, or Y, or Z." All the while, our families are left suffering for the price of their inaction.

I believe the word "representative" means a lot in elected office, friend. As a representative, you were chosen to represent the community and act in their best interest. But even though so many folks take on this term, too many in Congress aren't focused on addressing the urgent issues affecting hardworking families like protecting reproductive rights, getting weapons of war off of our streets, and lowering the cost of everyday items.

That's why I was proud to run as a Future Forum Candidate this fall. In Congress, Future Forum Democrats are tackling our toughest challenges and finding common ground – from inflation to the climate crisis. No excuses. Just putting in the hard work.

I'm proud to be serving my first full term in Congress alongside Future Forum Members who will protect the right to choose, fight extremism, and work hard for the American people. But right now, with dysfunction already gripping the GOP majority, we're going to need your support to deliver results through the gridlock. So please: Pitch in $10 or more to be split between Future Forum PAC and me – and help us keep up the fight for you in Congress.

Thank you,

Rep. Pat Ryan (NY-18)
